Brand systems for service businesses: what to invest in
If you have $25k for brand, here's the order to spend it. Most operators get this exactly backwards.
When a service-business operator has $25k earmarked for brand, the default impulse is to start with a new logo. This is almost always the wrong place to start. Logo is downstream - the visible expression of upstream decisions that haven't been made yet.
Spent in the right order, $25k buys a brand system that earns back its cost in pricing power inside two quarters. Spent in the wrong order, it buys a nicer logo on top of a fuzzy positioning, and nothing changes.
This is the cheapest layer and the highest-leverage one. Without it, every downstream decision is guesswork. With it, the rest of the system practically writes itself.
